Adventure game for grownupsGreat job with this "make your own business adventure" book. It contains balance sheets to help you make a more informed decision. You have various support exec's to give you advise. Often one VP offers the opposite advise of another VP. It's up to you to crunch the numbers to determine the best decision. I wish more books like this were published!

Surf Culture: The Art History of Surfing
Published in Paperback by Gingko Press (December, 2002)
Average review score:

Stecyk does it againAfter elevating the development of skateboarding from criminal activity to its proper place in modern culture with Dogtown and Z-Boys Stecyk, a long-time contributor to The Surfer's Journal, presents the artifacts of surfing culture in an equally intelligent manner. This book is developed from the recent exhibition at the Laguna Arts Museum. A must have for anyone interested in surfing. Steyck has come a long way from epoxying bronzed roadkill to major California roadways. He's an artist too.

Surfing Made Easy
Published in Paperback by CJF Publishing (June, 1997)
Average review score:

first rate how-to book on learning to surfI used this book to learn how to surf, and I am now a very good surfer. If you want a how-to book on how to surf, this is the one you need. It is a slim volume, with a home-made look to it, but its slimness is why you can learn to surf FAST, since all the information is efficiently told.

Symbolism of the Stupa (Studies on Southeast Asia)
Published in Paperback by Southeast Asia Program Publications (1988)
Average review score:

A hidden masterpiece! The title of this book is deceptively simple. It is not just about the symbolism of the stupa, but it encompasses much, much more. It is a detailed and scholarly description of Buddhist iconography and its Vedantic antecedents. As such it covers much of the cosmological and philosophical underpinnings of Brahmin and Buddhist myths, ritual, art and sculpture. I think it is compulsory reading for anyone intending to visit Buddhist places of pilgrimage, for it gives meaning not just to the structure of the stupa, but to most, if not all, the various symbols and art forms found in such places. Through this book one comes to appreciate, how dense the stupa and the various symbols associated with it are, in meaning and significance. Unfortunately the book as published by Motilal Banarsidass in the hardcover edition, has poor quality paper and the typeface is that used by the good old Remington mechanical typewriters of yesteryear. The excellence of the work will however keep any Buddhologist riveted! Even if your interests are not as deep as what this book caters for, it is still something you can dip in and out of, and still be richer for!

Take My Land, Take My Life: The Story of Congress's Historic Settlement of Alaska Native Land Claims, 1960-1971
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Alaska Pr (December, 2001)
Average review score:

The political history of Alaska is an eye-opening storyThis concludes the 134-year history of the U.S. government's relationships with Alaska's native peoples, begun in Mitchell's first book Sold American. The political history of Alaska is an eye-opening story which should be read by any with more than a casual interest in the state: this focuses on Congress' settlement of Alaska native land claims from 1960-71, providing plenty of detail unavailable elsewhere.

Tales of Ise: Lyrical Episodes from 10th Century Japan
Published in Hardcover by Stanford Univ Pr (December, 1989)
Average review score:

Another overlooked classic... a reprint in store?Along with the more famous works, such as the Tale of Genji and the Pillow Book, the Tales of Ise is another book which is on the to-know list of classical Japanese literature. This is a collection of short narratives about Ariwara no Narihira, one of the most famous poets in Japanese history. The stories are short, almost anecdotal, lending to easy reading. Probably more for the serious student or avid fan than the casual browser.

Finally. A Good TCP-IP bookHaving gone through two or three books on the subject, I finally picked up a copy of Craig's book. He makes the subject as clear as I think anybody could. With his help, I'm making heads and tails of the subject.
